Why you need: a peanut butter jar survival kit
Picture this:
You go for a drive with the kids down some dirt roads to try to find a new hiking trail and you get stuck. There’s no cell service, you’re miles away from a main road and it’s getting cold and dark. You didn’t pack any food, water or spare clothes because you thought you’d be home by dinner. What do you do?
First things first: HOPEFULLY you left a trip plan with someone. Hopefully you at least told someone where you were going and how long you’d be. Be it a spouse, friend, sister, or neighbour. More about this in another post…back to our scenario…
It could be a while before anyone even starts to think that you’re “missing”. So what do you do?
You open the trunk and pull out the survival kits that you have in there for each member of your crew. Everyone gets out their emergency blankets and hunkers down for the evening in the car. In the morning, you can gather your supplies and your kits and start to walk out towards the main road - luckily you have a compass to help you find your general direction of travel. By 10, everyone is hungry, so you share a small snack from one of the kits to provide some energy, and you keep going. As the sun rises, your bandanas and sunscreen help prevent sunburn and heat exhaustion, and you cross a stream where you fill up your containers and pop in a water purification tab to make it safe to drink. It’s 1 pm, you’ve reached the main road, and you see a car coming towards you - it’s your partner, with the satellite device, some extra supplies, and a ride home (don’t worry - you can get the car towed later). Relief.
Re-imagine this scenario without all the things in orange. Now, aren’t you glad you had that tiny little kit with you? What about a scenario where you’re out hiking in the woods? Stranded inbetween two towns because of wildfires?
In a pinch, these little survival kits can provide shelter and warmth, signalling, some spare calories, and a way to purify some water, among other things. Basically: the 10 Essentials for survival. They’re super simple to put together, can be very economical, and require minimal maintenance (just replacing expired food and water purification tabs). Plus, they’re relatively small, so you can throw them in anywhere you want a little more peace of mind.
I take them hiking, and I’m working on putting together one for each of our family members to keep in the trunk of the car.
So now you know why you might need one.
Let’s look at what’s in one:
